You may well have thought that the Mercury Cougar auto that the origins of the Mercury Cougar auto were nothing more than a whale sized version of simple Ford Thunderbird car. Yet many are surprised that the history and development of this classic American sportscar rather was that of the NASCAR legendary Mercury “Pony Car”, which kicked nothing but but “Butt” on the Trans-Am Automobile racing circuit.

Originally Lincoln- Mercury (considered at the time to be the luxury end of Ford Motor Corporation), had devised the idea of developing, designing and marketing a small sized sports car. The germ of this idea had started as early as February 1963 with the idea in the works of this smaller sports type vehicle to be sold within the North American automobile market.

But it was the success of the Ford Mustang product that finally put the pedal to the metal (or the design and marketing staff’s ok and budgeting of departmental project funding). It is said that nothing drives a project the automobile industry than the potential of excellent sales figures and profitability’s. Even the name of the vehicle product “Cougar” is not totally unique. Cougar is in the same vein as “Mustang” – both being sleek fast racing animals.

Although the Cougar was also built on a 111 inch wheelbase similar to the mustang auto sports car, the Cougar was rather three inches and half inches shorter than its cousin – the Thunderbird. Underneath the elegant sheet metal of the Cougar was a Mustang, so to speak. In actuality the Cougar shared with its cousins – the sporty Mustang, and the dourer family vehicle – the Ford Falcon (which was also known in the Canadian market as the Ford Frontenac product. The Ford Mustang had the greatest fortune of being born from the Ford Falcon product line. Mustang enthusiasts owe a great debt of gratitude to a so called compact “Family” car. The Ford Falcon allowed both the Mustang car project as well as the Cougar car product a quick to develop, cheap to produce as well as a proven and durable base platform. Even the dash of the early Mustangs was a direct copy of the Falcons.

Underneath all of the glitter of its elegant sheet metal the Cougar car was all Mustang, using the exact same Falcon front suspension and a solid rear axle with four-leaf springs. A base 289 cubic inch V-8 made 200 bhp (gross), but the real action came in the guise of a 390 cubic inch V-8 that made 320 bhp. A GT option included a performance handling package and power disc brakes that replaced more standard front brake drums. Finally special GT wheels rounded out the package.

It has been said that Lincoln Mercury’s chief designer had envisioned the Cougar as an elegant European sports car, along the lines of the Jaguar Mark 2. How was it that the Cougar went racing?

In 1967 Lincoln Mercury turned to Bud Moore to be the point man for a shot at the SCCA Trans-Am Championship. Team Cougar made up of drivers, Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones, Formula 1 driver Peter Revson and NASCAR driver Dave Pearson came in second in Ford Mustang’s team. In 1968 then under the aegis of Moore, driver DeWayne “Tiny” Lund went on to capture the NASCAR Grand Touring Championship.

So where and how did the Cougar go wrong and in the end become a rather non defined wishy washy bloated luxo sort of sports car by the end of its automobile production lifetime? What proved to be this product and projects undoing was the lack of true comprehension from the direct Mercury as well as Ford staff and executives as to what this car’s clear and distinct market was. It may be said that at the best they were disinterested and at the worst clueless and greedy. This lack of market focus, as well as not knowing and perceiving the needs and desires of the potential Cougar customer market proved to be the Cougar’s undoing. By the 1969 product introduction the Cougar was a little longer and a little wider. From then on it was only a short decent into landau roofs as well as the opera window type styling and options of the day. Once started this downward trend and spiral of the Cougar was inevitable. The halcyon years of the early Cougar – specifically the early Cougar model years of 1967 – 70 remain a time when the Cougar’s roar boomed out of dual exhausts and the sign of a car that had some bite to it.

Sneaking into the group of small but incredibly fast sports cars is the Brooke Double R. It was launched a while ago, but has been updated and improved by a couple of experienced engineers, and this lovely and tiny car is now in production. You get tremendous acceleration and cornering for your money.

Performance is sensational, and depends how much power you want. The most powerful Brooke Double R – 300 bhp – has a claimed 0-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds, while 260 bhp will get you to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds, and all the excitement that goes with that performance. To match it you will need a Noble M400 or Porsche 911 Turbo.

Clearly, the Brooke Double R is a real firecracker. The fact that the top speed is only about 155 mph – the same speed that many a supercar is limited to electronically – is not what it’s about. It is acceleration, braking and cornering that gives the real thrill of driving fast, and you will get it here.

Most of these open wheelers have front engines, but the Brooke Double R has a mid-mounted 2.3 liter Cosworth Ford engine, which develops 190, 260 or 300 bhp according to your choice. It is just like a mini version of a mid-engined racing car, just made a bit wider to get two people in.

Optimum weight distribution

To get near ideal weight distribution, the engine is mounted fore and aft instead of crosswise. With the engine mounted across the frame in unit with its transaxle, you get at bit too much weight at the back. On the other hand, with the engine in front of the transaxle, you get better weight distribution and a slimmer body – which is what the guys that designed the Brook Double R wanted.

Five-speed transaxle

To make this work, they had to find a good transaxle at a realistic price. Brooke has opted for a Renault five-speed unit, as a six-speeder would have cost a lot more. You might think a six-speed box was obligatory these days, but this is not the case for road use. With five well-chosen ratios you can get the same performance as with six-speeds, which often have too high gearing on the top two or even three ratios.

The car is clothed in an elegant and simple body with a tiny wraparound windshield, and cycle-type fenders – it looks just like a racing car for the sixties. The headlamps are concealed, and you raise them up manually. All nice and simple.

Cockpit like a racer, too

The cockpit is also simplicity itself – absolutely not a frill in site! You sit behind a small Momo steering wheel, with a flattened bottom rim section, and a big rev-counter set in an instrument binnacle off to one side. The gear lever is on the opposite side to normal – like on those old racing cars – which is to the right on right-hand drive cars and vice versa.

There is a neat pedal box with floor mounted pedals – as on the best cars – and a simple moulded seat.

You can have either a very low windscreen, or a slightly taller one. Both are still low with no room for wipers – they are really wind deflectors which you look over. Choose the lower one, and you will want a helmet on at speeds over 75 mph, despite the twin headrests.

Cosworth-Ford up to 300 bhp

In choosing a Cosworth- Ford engine Brooke has gone for quality and ease of obtaining parts needed for servicing. Cosworth provides a range of tuned Ford engines, modified to give the necessary durability for the power output, and as they are four-cylinder in-line units they are compact.

The base model comes with 190 bhp, then you can go to 260 bhp at 7,500 rpm with 200 lb ft (271 lb ft) torque at 6,100 rpm, or you can go for all-out power with the 300 bhp unit.

Suspension and steering are on classic lines, with double wishbones front and rear, of airfoil section because they need to slip through the air, with aluminum alloy suspension uprights. Coil springs and adjustable dampers are fitted front and rear.

Buy a Brooke Double R with 190 bhp and you will spend about $50,000 (£27,995) but if you want a manic, likely-to-lose-your-licence 300 bhp version you will need to fork out around $70,000 (£36,995). It will help if you live where there is plenty of sunshine and not much rain!

Among the most distinguished names in the auto industry is Mazda. More than 800,000 units of Mazda vehicles are being sold out in the market every year, which only shows Mazda as a reliable auto maker. It is known for its exciting concept cars, powerful engines, including the revolutionary Wankel engine and tough and reliable auto parts designed and made with the most sophisticated technology. In the field of racing, Mazda has also exhibited superiority in building cars through its several wins credited to two, three- and four-rotor Mazda cars and other modified Mazda autos of private racers.

Mazda definitely deserves no less than excellent care as it affords every Mazda user great driving satisfaction. One way of taking good care of your Mazda is by installing the finest replacement and aftermarket aftermarket Mazda parts.
Featured in this store are thousands of high quality safety parts for your Mazda car including Mazda tail lights, Mazda rear lights, Mazda Bumpers, Mazda rear bumper and Mazda Mirror. Headlights for example are designed to last longer than most auto parts; however, you can replace your stock Mazda headlights with excellently designed headlamps to give your Mazda a fresh new look. But more importantly, replacing your Mazda headlights with lamps that provide broader and longer beam can reduce risks in driving, especially at night.

Mirrors like the auto lights are important safety features in a car as they allow the driver to see the area behind or at the side of the car. High quality Mazda mirrors available at this Auto Parts Wholesale dealer provides better view of the road; thereby, they help prevent you from hitting obstacles, another vehicle or a pedestrian on the road more effectively.

Want to take a race with wind! Not a bad idea at all; only you need to have the right sports car to give you company. Cars are the most passionate possessions in the boy’s toy’s list especially when it comes to throwing challenge to the wind. So how do you find your dream sports car that gives you the height of joy at the top speed, yet comes for an affordable price? Well, here are a few useful tips to find out your sports car without burning a hole in your pocket.

Begin with the used cars

The most practical way of buying your car for most affordable price is to go for a used sports car. You can look for the classic sports cars like Fiat or Triumph, which can be restored back to their old glory for little price. These pre owned cars will help you to save on your sports car budget without cutting down on your adrenaline rush at the time of wild driving of a sports car. Owning and driving sports car become really enjoyable when you know where to find the most lucrative deals. There are two surefire ways of finding your dream sports car at an affordable price.

Online auction

Ask around and most of the auto enthusiasts will let you know that the best place for finding your dream sports car is the internet auto auctions. If you really want to strike it big, then take a virtual journey through the online auction of eBay Motors— the largest online auction in the world. The vast range of comparison that you can experience here is really amazing. But the best thing about eBay Motors is: you can strike gold here by taking the advantage of some real good bargains.

However you should take notice of some important areas like shipment and model number before entering into any sort of commitment.

Deals through friendly car mechanic

One way of grabbing a great bargain is forging a rapport with your local car mechanic. He is the best person to supply you with valuable information about fabulous deals at an unbelievable bargain. Informing beforehand your mechanic about the sports car you are looking for will definitely help you to come across the sports car of your dream. The mechanic is a person to rely on so far as buying a used car is concerned because the mechanic has worked on the car and he knows the exact condition of the car.

Sometimes the car owners fail to foot the bill of the car repairing and in that case the mechanic gets back his money by putting the car for sale. This situation can offer you a particularly lucrative deal as it allows for great bargains.

In case you do not happen to find the sports car of your dream in pre owned market, keep an eye on the advertisements put up by the car dealers; sometimes car dealers offer big rebates and huge discounts that make for a really lucrative deal. Grab these offers to become the proud owner of a brand new sports car that won’t make you break the bank.

Edmunds and several leading automotive blogs are theorizing that Buick will finally go ahead and build a sport version of its popular LaCrosse midsize sedan. Unlike the original model, the proposed car will be a true roadster as Buick seeks to inject some youthfulness into its aging model line. This is big news for Buick, which hasn’t built a true youth oriented car since stopping production of the hot-rod Regal Grand National during the 1980s. Will the Super Sport be enough to help Buick recapture a lost segment of the marketplace? That remains open to debate, so let’s see what Buick is planning with the Super Sport and then you can decide for yourself.

For the past several years, Buick has been near the top in most customer satisfaction and quality surveys. After years of languishing much further down the list, Buick decided to truly emphasize quality and that move has paid off. However, quality cars are one thing while exciting cars are another. Quite simply, Buick hasn’t been building cars that are high on the “wow” factor list. Sales have remained flat as the age level of its buyers continued to rise. Anyone who understands the business of cars will tell you that you must continually appeal to a younger audience in order to grow and prosper. Let’s just say that even younger AARP drivers haven’t been heavily drawn to the current Buick model line up.

As far as the Super Sport goes, the car is based on the concept Velite a car that has been appearing at auto shows over the past few years. Much like the Lexus SC430, the Super Sport will be targeting upscale buyers attracted to a combination of luxury, performance, and premium styling. While drive train information hasn’t been finalized, reports of a 300 hp V8 being offered has been circulating. Likely, this engine will be mated to a six speed automatic. A 3.6L twin turbo producing more than 400 hp has also been rumored for the Super Sport, but that engine choice might be scratched if gas prices remain historically high.

Information about specific Super Sport features is rather limited, but if the car holds true to the Velite concept, buyers can expect the following with the Super Sport:

– Heritage styling based on a late 1930s Buick boat tail design. Buick’s recognizable waterfall grille design coupled with decorative side portholes are also expected to appear on the Super Sport.

– 20 inch front wheels and 21 inch rear wheels; rear wheel drive.

– Leather 2 plus 2 seating.

– A retractable hood that will fit snugly into the trunk.

– Full cabin amenities including OnStar and XM satellite radio switches integrated into the dashboard.

Beyond what has been listed, the rest is speculation including possible build and release dates for the Super Sport. GM’s current financial woes will impact the final decision on whether to build this car, but if approval is given a 2008 or 2009 release is possible.

Yes, Buick needs a car of this caliper to breathe new life into a rather uninspiring line up. Prices for the Super Sport will likely exceed $40,000 limiting the car’s appeal to those with significant means. Still, if Buick is able to pull it off the Super Sport it may pave the way for additional model changes, perhaps even opening the door for a Regal-inspired car to rejoin the line up. Now that would be great news for a brand that sorely needs a fresh youth injection.

Carbon Fiber has become a popular tool in the customization of cars in the last decade. Vehicles all over the world have begun to see the benefits of utilizing quality carbon fiber. There is no doubt that as time goes on, more and more vehicles will be seen sporting this lightweight and strong material. And the trend is not just with customized vehicles. Auto manufacturers are using this material in creation of their higher end sports cars and exotics.

There was times when Carbon Fiber was tremendously expensive. New technologies, popularity, and better production methods have lowered the cost of production and ultimately the end price for the consumer in recent years. It is now affordable to almost everyone. And if your thinking that the price of a product is too expensive for your needs, consider the amount of gas money you will save in the long run after you add carbon fiber products to your car. They are light in weight. Reducing the overall weight of your vehicle is a great way to conserve gas, saving money after years of driving.

One item for autos that makes use of of this great invention is the Carbon Fiber Hood. This product benefits your vehicle for many reasons and should be considered as one of the first mods to be accomplished when hooking up your new vehicle. These Hoods can be found on the internet at great prices. There are several online retailers who offer custom hoods from many different manufacturers. You can get these hoods for virtually any year, make, and model of vehicles.

Automobiles and homes are the two largest investments that many people make. Some cars today even costs as much as some lower cost homes in town. Just down the street here there is a home in foreclosure that is listed for around $40,000. It is a frame home with a small lot, but is on a nice street. Around the corner, I drove by a new car lot that was sporting signs on their windshields that say, “Sale! $42,000 New Luxury Car”. With the amount of money that people spend on cars and automotive related items, it is only natural that one would need lots of information on various car topics.

In many countries, one must have a license before driving. Here in the United States when someone is 16 years old they begin the process to become a licensed driver. First, a written test is given based on the driver’s manual. If passed, then the person is issued a learners permit. This allows the beginning driver to drive with another licensed driver. These cards can be renewed several times, but the learning driver cannot drive by themselves until they pass the driving test. As soon as the learning driver is ready they can go back to the driver’s license center and take a driving test with a police officer. This can either take place on a driving course or on the actual streets. If passed then the person receives his full fledged driver’s license. One major benefit of waiting to get a driver’s license it the cost of insurance. Most premiums that cover a family do not change while a family member is on the learner’s permit but as soon as that driver has a license the premiums can increase dramatically.

With the cost of fuel and cars themselves, some people prefer motorcycles or motorbikes. London and other European cities are frequently full with many motorbikes in the streets. Similar to here in the states, a license is required for operating a motorbike. Instead of a written test, such as we have here in the US, drivers have to first invest a day of their time taking the Compulsory Basic Training course or ‘Motorbike CBT Test”. This training gives the person instruction on safety equipment and hands-on riding on a track. In the hand-on section the rider is asked to drive in and out of traffic cones, make emergency stops, and other maneuvers with the bike. Once the CBT scooter training is finished someone is then issued a license for 24 months. This allows them to ride on streets and roads without a passenger. They are also not allowed to travel on the motorways. In order to keep the certification though, the driver has to return within two years and take a module one and module two motorbike exam.

Once someone owns their own car it is only natural that they will turn their attention to maintenance things such as tires, windshield wipers, oil seals, and batteries. Car owners also like to make their cars unique with the installation of things like GPS tracking systems, custom paint jobs, new sound systems, and really good tires. The world of automotive has something to offer anyone who prefers to handle their own transportation.

The better known ZR1 of the 1990’s started to come together in the 1980’s between the Corvette development team and the Lotus Engineering group. The two entities wanted to build an entirely new V8 engine that would be installed in a limited production line of Corvettes that were based on the C4 generation Corvette. This new engine, complimented the already long list of other large differences from its predecessor the C3, to include over 250 lbs weight difference, rear mounted transaxle, transverse leaf spring suspension and the central backbone.

The all aluminum block called the LT5 had the same displacement 5.7 liters/350cu. in. while also sporting the same 4.4 in. bore centers as the L98 engine did. However it was a 4 cam, 32 valve monster that put out 375 hp at 6000 rpms which by the way was only 5 horsepower shy of the very popular Ferrari Testarossa. To get a better idea, the L98 only put out 250 hp at 4400 rpms. It was only a matter of short time until everyone was happy with the way the LT5 performed and brought the production of the engine from Lotus in England to Mercury Marine plant in Stillwater Oklahoma.

There were a few things that stood out with the LT5 C4 Corvette, which was coded RPO ZR1 as an option from the base C4 Corvette. There were the 11 inch wide rear tires, wide bodywork, wider doors, rounded taillights and squared off exhaust tips. The ZR1 also boasted the ZF built 6 speed manual transmission and the all new FX3 suspension that was developed by Lotus Engineering. The option package started at $27,000 the first year and quickly grew to $31000 in its second year in which it stayed at this price for the duration of its existence.

Needless to say the ZR1 was an immediate success and not even the hefty price tag of almost $60,000 would slow it down. The ZR1 had some hefty performance numbers to go along with its price tag. Tests at the time stated a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph. The ZR1 had an outstanding skidpad outing of.93g which meant that this beast was going to take the corners like no ones business and it soon did. March of 1990 on the 7.5 mile track at Ft. Stockton TX. The stock ZR1 took 3 open class world records for both speed and endurance, 5000 miles with an average speed of 173.791, 5000 kilometers with an average speed of 175.710 mph and 4221 miles at 175.885 mph.

In the next handful of years the ZR1 received a few different updates and upgrades that continued to enhance its overall appeal. Some of those changes were subtle moves and some were a little more bold. In 1992 badges were put on the fenders and traction control became a standard feature. Then in 1993 the cylinder heads were redesigned along with the valve train of the LT5 that ultimately brought the power up from 375 to 405 while the torque jump up a respectful 10 ft pounds. All in all the LT5 was the first V8 in the post smog era to have over 400 hp.

Even with the power improvements and all the other upgrades production of the ZR1 halted in 1995 with a total of 6939 ZR1s being built. This was a disappointment to so many people as the ZR1 was just a treat to drive. From its unique exhaust tone that was in between a Ferrari and a healthy small block V8 to the outstanding handling capabilities it possessed from the FX3 suspension along with everything else. One note worth mentioning was the 0-150 mph in less than a half of a minute! WOW.

Now enter in the new ZR1 Corvette, which has completely blown away the older ZR1s in every aspect that is imaginable. This was expected though as it has been a dozen years for the folks at GM to conjure up some insanely different and powerful ideas for the new ZR1. This is the quickest production Corvette ever made. Most of the body is carbon fiber on the new ZR1 which brings this animal in at a paltry 3132 pounds of power packed fun. The power plant on the new ZR1 is a 6.2 liter V8 that has an all new R2300 Eaton four lobe roots style supercharger sitting on top of it. This is apparent by simply looking through the polycarbonate window in the hood. This power plant boasts 620 hp which is more than the powerful Viper, the Ferrari 599 GTB and very close to the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640. However, the Ferrari and the Lamborghini both are over $300,000 while the new ZR1 comes in at a little over $100,000.

Ultimately the new ZR1 was built as a supercar out of the box that needs no modifying whatsoever. From its massive 15+ inch rotors to its fully built tranny and rear end the new ZR1 is ready to take to the track from day one. The new ZR1 will undoubtedly become a favorite to those few lucky people that end up getting one.

A truly exhilarating car – that’s the AC MkV. Very much back to basics, this AC, based on the forbears of the AC-Shelby Cobra lacks the bells and whistles of soft supercars. Instead, you get raw power, and control is down to you – not a horde of electronics systems. The car can get to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 145 mph – held back by an intentionally old-fashioned body shape, albeit in new materials.

Original Shelby Cobra based on AC Ace

The original AC Shelby Cobra was based on the AC Ace, a two-seater open sports cars powered by a modest 2.0 liter six-cylinder engine. The twin-tube frame had transverse leaf springs and independent suspension front and rear. Quite advanced in its day, but the suspension did not locate the wheels that well.

AC Cars, one of the oldest British car companies, has been revived several times, and various sports cars have been designed, but never quite made it – or not for long. Now, the firm has gone back to its roots. It is supplying Shelby Automotive with aluminum bodies for its Cobras, and has introduced its own car – the AC MkV, which is being marketed in Europe and the USA.

So is there room for another hard-core sports car that looks like all those Cobra replicas? Well, with the AC MkV you get the original, the car is complete, and the body is made from advanced materials. Most of the replicas are kit cars. Not everyone wants to spend three to six months building a car.

Retains the 60s look of the Cobra

Of course, the car looks like a Cobra, complete with the oval grille, small circular headlamps and wide flared rear fenders. A small air intake below the grille, and two small side air intakes give the car some identity. The body is made from carbon fiber composites, unlike the earlier model, or the Cobras, which have aluminum panels, or the lookalikes which make do with glass fiber.

Twin-tube frame and wishbone suspension

The basis of the AC MkV is a ladder-type twin-tube frame made from 4.0-inch steel tubes, as it was on the earlier MkIV which went out of production in 2002. Double wishbone suspension is used front and rear, and these links have a rather narrow base compared with more modern supercars.

Conventional coil spring/damper units are used all round, and roll is controlled by front and rear anti-roll bars. The steering is by rack and pinion.

Into this frame is installed a Ford 5.0 liter V-8 engine and six-speed manual gearbox. In European trim the engine develops 340 bhp @ 6,000 rpm, and is red-lined at 6,800 rpm, giving a good speed range. Maximum torque is 369 lb ft (500 Nm) @ 4,800 rpm.

The AC MkV is a taut lightweight sports car which has the brakes, wheels and tires to match – 7 inch rims at the front and 8 inch at the back. Kerb weight is just 2,643 lb (1,200 kg) giving a power-to-weight ration of 280 bhp per tonne. You’ll get neck-snapping acceleration to match many more exotic cars, and a lot of fun.
